![]() The Hossa area The most well known nature attraction of Suomussalmi is the Hossa hiking area. It is situated in the northern part of the municipality, between highway 5 and the Juntusranta-Kuusamo road. Hossa was formed by the ice ages: 8000-9000 years ago the mighty edge of the ice sheet covering most of the northern hemisphere ended at Hossa, where three rivers of melting water met and moulded the ridges, leaving behind sandy heaths. The beautiful ridges covered by pine and lichen divide the waterways of the area, the ridges having been formed into natural travelling routes. Hossa is a paradise for fishermen and hikers. The easy-to-travel terrain, fine features of the ridges and lakes, clear waters and many cultural attractions all await the hiker and cross-country skier. In addition to being a fine wilderness area, Hossa has also long been inhabited. The prehistoric paintings at Värikallio are c. 4000 years old. The Hossa hiking area was founded in 1979. It covers c. 8700 hectares (of which 20% are covered by water). The area is maintained by the Finnish forest department. ![]() Back to top |
